
Hyejun Melania Kwon
Mezzo-Soprano
Mezzo-soprano Hyejun Melania Kwon, based in Germany, is currently a resident soloist (Ensemble Mitglied) at Theater Hagen for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons. Her repertoire at the house includes roles such as Flora (La Traviata), Junon (Platée), the Page (Salome), and Rosalia (West Side Story). In the upcoming 2026/27 season, she is scheduled to perform Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus), Lola (Cavalleria Rusticana), and Krista (The Makropulos Case), and will also appear as the Alto Soloist in Bach’s Johannes Passion and Handel’s Messiah.Career
During the 2024/25 season, as an ensemble soloist at the Aalto-Theater Essen, she proved her artistic versatility by performing the Third Lady (Die Zauberflöte), Lovis (Ronja Räubertochter), and multiple roles in Wagner’s Parsifal, including a Blumenmädchen, Stimme aus der Höhe, and the 2. Knappe. As a member of the NRW Opera Studio (2022–2024), she performed a wide range of roles including Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), La suora zelatrice (Suor Angelica), La Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi), Laura (Iolanta), Venus (Orpheus in the Underworld), Fortuna/Valletto (L’incoronazione di Poppea), and Valencienne (The Merry Widow).On the international stage, she has appeared as Carmen at Opéra Bastide (France) and as Mother Goose (The Rake’s Progress) at the Verbier Festival (Switzerland). She has collaborated with renowned conductors such as James Gaffigan, Sebastien Lang-Lessing, Rasmus Baumann, Giuliano Betta, and Patrick Hahn, and worked with directors including Anja Kühnhold, Nikolaus Habajan, Yara Hassan, Roland Schwab, and Immo Karaman.


Awards & Scholarships
Her artistic achievements have been recognized with scholarships from the Richard Wagner Federation (Bayreuth Festival, 2026), the Berghausen Stipendium (2026), the Mozart Gesellschaft Dortmund (2024), and the Werner Richard - Dr. Carl Dörken Foundation (2024/25). In addition, she was awarded the Anita Rachvelishvili Special Prize (2025) and was selected for the Georg Solti Accademia Masterclass. Kwon has won First Prize at the King’s Peak International Music Competition (2023), the 18th “Premio Citta’ di Padova” (2022), and the “Nouvelles Etoiles” (2022).Education
She is currently pursuing her Konzertexamen at the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar under the tutelage of Prof. Anne Schwanewilms. She holds a Master of Music from the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin (Prof. Ewa Wolak) and a Bachelor of Music from Ewha Womans University (Prof. Eunhee Kim). She has further refined her artistry through masterclasses with legendary figures such as Carlo Rizzi, Edith Wiens, Olaf Bär, Thomas Hampson, Neil Shicoff, Véronique Gens, Barbara Frittoli, Brigitte Fassbaender, and Wolfram Rieger.
